Hop Off the “Roller-Coaster Yo-Yo”!
Tired of “yo-yo results” with dieting? Some studies show that almost two-thirds of American adults are “currently dieting.” Other results show that almost one-in-five of us is “constantly dieting.” Sadly, many of us continue to grow heavier by the month, with almost all of us gaining back our “losses” after each new program. Finally, more and more of us reach out to surgery as a hopeful solution – but the results can be disappointing. And then the weight-gain starts again. Don’t try to make up new rules as you go along. The simplest “hint for success” that we can offer is ….. just do the program. (Our BetterBody EXPRESSsm hCG Program, that is!)
Do you need a friend to lean on? All of us do! Enlist your friends and family to help encourage and applaud your success – and you’ll be even more successful. Here’s something you might not have thought of: invite your spouse, your parent, your adult child, or a friend to join you on the program – buddy-up works! And, at the very least, give a call to one of our Treatment Counselors for a “pep talk.” We’re here to help you achieve your goals.
Worried About Eggs and Beef? They’re NOT the Problem!
Carbohydrates – sugars and starches (all kinds of sugars, pastries, breads, potatoes, rice, corn, and so on) – are by far dangerous to any diet program … and to the maintenance of weight lost. As soon as fats and starch are combined – such as with potato chips, French fries, pastries and donuts, and so on – things are very liable to get out of hand.
You’ll need to exercise your will power when snacks and other temptations present themselves. One hint that can make a huge difference is to drink a large glass of water whenever you feel hungry or whenever faced by a not-allowed temptation. Keep a quart or two of allowed “lemonade” or “tea” in the refrigerator, quickly available to ward off sudden sugar cravings and to quench your thirst.
Choose teas that help give you the feelings/sensations that you desire. Some people claim that Yerba Matte Royale Instant Tea from Wisdom Naturals gives an energy boost and suppresses appetite. Again, you can use stevia or xylitol as a sweetener. (Erythritol is fine as well.)
Fruit-flavored liquid stevia can “sweeten” coffee, teas, lemonade. Even allowable “salad dressing” can take on new dimensions with berry flavorings. Stevia in different flavors is made by Wisdom Naturals, available online or at health food stores.
Attention All Couch Potatoes:
Another hint to help reduce your food temptations is to take a brief walk. Just getting out briefly and moving your muscles, breathing deeper, and changing your “scene” can help you “stick with it.” Remember to avoid vigorous exercise unless you feel exceptionally well by maintaining a pre-diet exercise program.
Another way to deal with those unexpected temptations is to carry a picture of yourself when you looked younger, thinner, healthier – that’s your goal! Mentally remind yourself that you want to gain these rewards again. If you don’t have an earlier picture, find a reasonable one (not a super-skinny model!) in a magazine or flyer, cut it out and carry it with you as your reminder … this is the future you’re working toward.
In a RUSH to lose weight? Then slow down and take the time to EAT!
What you see is what you get! Cut your food into tinier pieces and serve them on a smaller-size plate. Chew each bite thoroughly (about “50 times” or so, maybe fewer), as this will stimulate your “satiety center” (the “I’m full” brain controller) to feel satisfied with less food intake. Incidentally, remember to eat all the food each day, as we outline in your program notes. Starvation is NOT the goal of this program!
What if you’re “suffering” with various food cravings, write these down. Include details about the times and situations in which these cravings seem to claim your attention. Get this information to your Treatment Counselors so that we can recommend changes to your program. Our goal is to understand the biochemistry behind your cravings, so that we can address your particular, personal needs. Remember, we’re not trying to fityou into this program, instead we’re trying to fit the program around your specific requirements.
Secret Poisons in Your Food?
MSG can be particularly harmful, since it can “secretly” be included in many foods. (The other big offender is HFCS – high-fructose corn syrup – used as a sweetener in many, many foods; but the Simeons program eliminates those items “automatically.”) MSG can interfere with your brain and body cells in terms of your weight set-point. The problem is that it can be “labeled” in dozens of different ways on prepared/processed foods. Avoid foods that contain any of these “secret” names for MSG, monosodium glutamate, listings that are permitted by the Food and Drug Administration: L-glutamate or glutamate (or L-glutamic acid or glutamic acid), hydrolyzed vegetable protein, autolyzed yeast (extract), whey protein, soy sauce (and steak sauce and Worcestershire sauce), autolyzed protein, textured protein, yeast extract, protein isolate, modified food starch, modified corn starch, calcium caseinate, sodium caseinate, broth, maltodextrin, seasonings, natural flavor, monopotassium glutamate, gelatin, hydrolyzed plant protein, yeast food, yeast nutrient, torula yeast, seaweed extract, (Bragg) liquid aminos, Savorex spread, Vegex spread. Brand names of MSG flavoring products include Ac’cent, Ajinomoto, Vetsin, and Tasting Powder. Avoid prepared stock broths (stock cubes or bouillon cubes), condiments such as barbeque sauce and salad dressings, canned/frozen/or dried prepared foods, common snack foods such as flavored jerky, flavored potato chips, flavored tortilla chips, and various seasoning mixtures (including “dip mixes”). Similarly, be cautious that foods can contain sugar without using the term “sugar” at all. Avoid foods that list any of these ingredients: honey, brown sugar, corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, glucose, maple syrup, sucrose, lactose, malt, maltose, molasses, rice syrup, panocha, powdered sugar, treacle, cane sugar, demerara sugar, galactose, invert sugar, corn syrup solids, high-fructose corn syrup. Artificial sweeteners need to be avoided as well: Splenda, sucralose, Equal, NutraSweet, aspartame, saccharin, Sweet ‘N Low.
