August 31st Is International Overdose Awareness Day

Most Americans are aware that February is associated with heart health awareness, while October is now recognized as the month in which breast cancer awareness is promoted. There are lesser-known conditions that are heralded during each month throughout the year. I’m not sure who decides to market the specific diseases and who benefits from increased awareness, but here’s one for the month of August that I think deserves attention.  International Overdose Awareness Day – August 31. I wonder who would pay for the marketing? Certainly not the drug companies that have made more decent people opioid dependent than the drug cartels.

Let’s face it. People in pain will seek relief from pain and most will do whatever their mainstream medical doctors tell them to do. What most people won’t do however, is break out of the mainstream medical merry-go-round and find an integrative doctor who can help them get to the real source of the pain and make it lessen considerably or go away entirely. It’s no wonder then that we have more than 100,000 people dying from drug overdose in this country every year – a tremendous increase in the last couple of years.

I’m all in favor of making people aware of the drug over use and overdose problems. So, if that is something you’re interested in, know that August 31st is the day of awareness. If, on the other hand you are interested in getting to the source of your pain instead of merely numbing out to it, give my office a call. Let’s get to the bottom of what’s causing your pain, and I’m talking about any pain you’re experiencing, and help you feel better without drugs or surgery.
